Yukon River Canoe Trip

Yukon River Canoe Trip

website Yukon River Canoe Trip
Travel journal by a mother and her son of their canoe trip down the Yukon River from Minto to Dawson City. Contains daily journal entries with photos. In the early Spring, my Mum indicated she wanted to come up to the Yukon for a visit. I had been thinking of hiking the Chilkoot Trail and semi-jokingly asked if she'd be interested, temporarily forgetting how driven my mum can be to tackle any challenge. Several test hikes later with my Dad, she admitted that her hips weren't up to it.

Story of canoeing through the Canadian wilderness, admiring countless moose, and staying a step ahead of the bears. Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario--The moose lifted its head and glared at us across the water, long strands of lily pad roots dangling from its suddenly motionless jaw. I froze, my paddle poised in midair, daring to move nothing but my eyes.

Slowly, cautiously, the moose began to chew, its wet crunching the only sound in the quiet Canadian twilight. Its velvety antlers spread outward from its huge, ungainly head, lending an air of majesty to the beast, which lingered now just 50 feet away.

A 1998 trip canoe trip covering 100km of the western part of Algonquin Park in 4 days. We left Ottawa in the morning of May 21, 1998. With the traditional stop at Renfrew's MacDonald's, we drove to the the Algonquin Outfitters store on Lake Opeongo. There we left our car and were driven by the outfitters' crew to the Tim River's access point (#2 on Algonquin Park's map).
